The quality of customer service enjoyed by first direct mortgage clients has been lauded by a representative from the firm.

Senior product manager at the organisation Richard Tolchard described this aspect of the company's offering as "legendary" and claimed that people will be able to rely on its advisors in the long term.

His comments were made after the company highlighted the importance of lowering mortgage payments before the bills begin to arrive to pay for the jollity over Christmas.

Mr Tolchard pointed out that some or the firm's home finance deals feature fees as low as £99.

"With first direct's 2.19 per cent two year tracker, homeowners can be enjoying lower monthly mortgage payments by the time their festive bills need paying," he added.

This week, the brand published research showing that people in the UK expect to receive about £587 million of gift money over the Christmas period, including presents such as cheques, vouchers and pre-paid cards.
