Students have been advised by mydeposits.co.uk that their landlords have the right to pop over and see how tenants are looking after their houses.

Chief executive of the website Eddie Hooker highlighted how easy it is for university attendees to get caught up in the excitement of being away from home.

However, he pointed out that it is important to understand the rules relating to tenancy agreements and one of these is that buy-to-let mortgage landlords are allowed to check the state of their property.

The firm said this is quite normal and tenants can expect to get reasonable notice before a visit occurs.

"Today's students face the challenges of taking care of everything from cooking and cleaning to being responsible for their finances - all on top of their studies - which can be quite daunting," noted the mydeposits.co.uk spokesperson.

Last month, the same organisation published a set of guidelines for landlords relating to wear and tear.
