Homebuyers have been advised by a Clydesdale Bank mortgage expert not to worry about houses being haunted.

Steve Reid, retail director at the organisation, urged people to forget stories of "ghosts and goblins" and instead get a good survey of a property carried out.

He said: "99 per cent of noises and seemingly strange occurrences have perfectly reasonable explanations - like loose floorboards, birds nesting in the loft or a dodgy boiler."

His comments were made after Clydesdale Bank mortgage research showed that 57 per cent of Brits would be put off buying a house if it was supposedly haunted, while 46 per cent claimed they would be more interested in viewing such a place.

Mr Reid concluded that this makes a ghostly presence a double-edged sword.

Last week, the same financial institution revealed that homeowners spend about £235 million each year fixing failed DIY tasks around the house, with Londoners the least competent at home improvement of all regions in the UK.
