The self-build market has remained strong despite the credit crisis, according to Self-build.

Marrion Morton, administration manager at the financial services provider, said while constructing a property can seem attractive, those interested in creating their own home need to educate themselves about what is involved prior to beginning work.

"Self-build insurance is imperative for all clients. If you can't get finance for self-build then you can't put the insurance in place. It needs to be in place from day one," she said.

People need to know where they are going to live, what they are going to build and have their insurance in place before they can begin to build, she added.

Ms Morton commented following the release of the 2009-13 Self Build Housing Market report from AMA research, which indicated that new self-build competitions had declined by 11.1 per cent to 14,000 in 2008.

It predicted that competitions are expected to total 13,500 in 2009 and 14,000 in 2010.
