The government must protect first-time buyers by preventing another house price boom, says a campaigner for affordable homes.

Katy John of PricedOut.org.uk is worried that another surge in the market could happen if certain factors are not addressed, stating this would be "bad news" for first-time buyers.

She believes that the government should be building more houses and taxing those with more than one property, rather than putting money into shared-ownership schemes.

However, for the time being though she feels that asking prices for homes are on their way down.

"We expect to see further falls in house prices, or at the very least, an adjustment over the coming months to more affordable homes," said Ms John.

The mix-adjusted average house price was £191,423 in June 2009 according to the Department of Communities and Local Government house price index.
