Prospective homeowners may be heartened by the view of an unbiased.co.uk mortgages spokesperson, who suggested the market is in the ascendency.

Chief executive of the website Karen Barrett admitted that it has been a "tough couple of years", but claimed that more competitive deals are appearing and new lenders are making an impression on the industry.

She noted that despite the historically low base interest rate, lending criteria has prevented a significant number of people from securing home finance deals.

But Ms Barrett added: "Over the last six to twelve months however, there has been more and more good news about the mortgage market."

According to unbiased.co.uk research, there has been a 24 per cent increase in the number of buyers looking for mortgage advice on the website over the past six months.

Last week, Ms Barrett lauded the firm's IFA strategy, which she claimed allows it to gradually move towards more sustainable sources of funding.
