The National Landlords Association (NLA) has praised the new coalition government for its decision to scrap the proposed landlord register.

Chairman of the industry body David Salusbury agreed with housing minister Grant Shapps in thinking the idea was well meaning but flawed and would have created additional red tape for property letters.

He stated: "We wholeheartedly welcome the reminder from Government that the vast majority of tenants are happy with the service they receive from landlords."

In his view, the proposal would not have rooted out "rogue landlords", but would have more likely penalised those who play by the rules.

Mr Salusbury claimed that it would have been the wrong way to raise standards in the sector.

This week, the NLA released a statement suggesting that not everyone is in a position to own their own home and more could benefit from renting for a while before taking out a mortgage.

The organisation said more balance is needed between rented and bought accommodation.
